How lucky are we to live in BC? Particularly, the South Okanagan?! Typically, we would be raking the last of the leaves on the ground to fill our Halloween lawn bags for the soon to come trick or treaters. However, this year, most of the trees are still full of their leaves! To look around, we might be deceived into thinking it’s still summer (but for those Maple trees that are splendidly colorful), especially with the daytime highs! People are still harvesting produce from their gardens that would long be over if we had those traditional cooler nights, but not this year!
Just a week ago, I was in Kelowna for a Re/Max conference with agents from all over Western Canada, and everyone was in awe that people are still out paddle boarding and hopping in the lake IN OCTOBER! I did reassure them that this isn’t typical, but it made me realize what an amazing geographical area it is that we live in. I already know this, (obviously this is why I live here), but I guess I just take it for granted at times, when I should be TAKING ADVANTAGE!
So, I decided that’s just what I was going to do! I enjoyed some of this untraditional weather by taking in a cidery with a dear friend of mine, and while we basked in the warmth of the sun, sipping ciders at the family run local Heritage Cidery, we watched her two little ones run around the apple trees laughing and squealing in excitement, but to soon discover how overdressed they were!! Therefore, it was off to Sunoka beach once we finished off our delicious Pineapple cider. There was no hope of a dry child once they saw the water! Perhaps if it was still summer, there would have been towels, but no, it’s mid October. The water was cool, yes, but not so much for children. It’s that same kind of excitement you get during a beautiful warm spring, and cannot wait to jump into the lake, even with the cooler water temperatures, but who cares if you can dry off and warm up in the Okanagan sun??
So, like I did, I encourage you to get out there, hit up the local wineries, like Summergate or the Okanagan Crush Pad and cideries and sit on their patios! Go to Sunoka or Peach Orchard beach and enjoy the last of the fall warmth. Maybe bring along some wood to burn in a fire pit and roast some hot dogs?! Don’t forget your towels 😊
